When comparing gym facilities to see which is right for you, independent clubs should be on your list of places to evaluate.
While they may not have dozens of locations worldwide to offer you when you travel, they often have other amenities that can satisfy your workout needs.
Most independent clubs are owned by natives and so usually have a very local appeal. The added benefit of knowing that your membership dollars are going towards a small, local business owner also appeals to many who decide to join. Independent clubs may have limited membership numbers as well, so they won't be too crowded and you won't have trouble finding parking.
The services and amenities may be a little more limited, but not by as much as you would think. You will often find the same state-of-the-art equipment and machines, and a great selection of weightlifting stations, etc. What you may not find as much of (if at all) is a class selection.
Unlike chain gyms that may have hundreds or even thousands of members in an area, the smaller gyms may only have dozens of members. Therefore, it is not profitable for them to hire someone to lead classes that only one or two members may show up to.
That being said, a smaller locally owned gym may still be what the doctor ordered for you. The camaraderie, neighborhood appeal and smaller membership numbers definitely give them an advantage over mega-chains. If you crave a smaller group setting without a lot of corporate hoopla then try one of these smaller gyms on for size.
