Before you shell out money for a membership, make a gym checklist, then go to the center and make sure it meets your needs.
Though there are basics that every single workout center should have, you can also tailor your gym checklist to meet your specific needs, depending on your fitness level and overall health goals.
The first and possibly most important thing that should be on your gym checklist is atmosphere. When you walk into the room, do you feel at home or uncomfortable?
Many offer free trial passes of up to two weeks for you to safely evaluate the atmosphere without giving up your hard-earned money- take advantage of this! If you workout for a day or two and don't feel comfortable, you will just be wasting your money. If you are a woman, you may want to visit an all-female facility and do your gym checklist.
The next thing to consider is equipment. If you want to pursue circuit training, you must make sure they have enough equipment to do so. If you are into free weights but they only have weightlifting benches, then you may be out of luck. Know what equipment you want to use and make sure they have it!
Cleanliness is a big concern, especially in the showers and locker room. If you plan to use these facilities, check them out for mold or mildew and avoid ones that don't seem to be clean.
The staff is a big concern as well. Are they helpful and professional at all times? Are they approachable? Are the personal trainers certified and experienced? You should take these into concern because they are your gateway to the rest of the club- and can make or break your satisfaction and comfort levels.
