Iyengar Yoga

Iyengar yoga is a very good method for those who are looking to reduce their risk of injuries and help relieve back pain. The reason for this is because Iyengar Yoga focuses mostly on creating a proper alignment throughout the body and improving posture.

In the Iyengar yoga school it is taught that there is a correct way to do each pose and that when done correctly you will help to strengthen the muscles that are needed to maintain good form. It does take a while to master these poses however so one does need to invest a great deal of time to practicing.

Believers of this form feel that once you have created a good and harmonious alignment in the body this will transfer over to the mind and you will then be more relaxed, calm and centred.

This is one form of exercise that is slightly different however in that it uses props during the class. Most commonly included are blocks, straps, chairs, pillows and blankets. The reason they use these props is to help the participant learn this new and proper alignment if they are not yet strong enough to hold them on their own.

The poses in this class are held for a longer period of time than other methods such as with ashtanga and in between the poses the participant will rest in a child's or corpse pose. As you do not move consecutively from one pose to the next you will not gain too many cardiovascular benefits from this exercise, however, since you are holding the poses for a longer period of time you will see more muscular strength increases.

Additionally, since you are able to slowly work you way up with this exercise it is excellent for any participant at any age or skill level.
