What exactly is a weight watcher point? Given the popularity of the program, most of us have heard the term 'weight watcher point' and understand the basic principle that according to the slimming plan, foods are all assigned a particular weight watcher point value, which helps slimmers determine how much they're allowed to eat per day.

The Weight Watcher Point system is basically a simplified way of counting calories, with most of the difficult math done for you. The company determines the 'value' of particular foods with a complex mathematical equation which takes into account a food's calorie content, fat content and fibre content. The system allows for a high level of flexibility for slimmers, who can choose the specifics of their personal program. The amount of units a slimmer is allotted each day is selected based how much they want to lose, and this number of units can be increased if the slimmer is participating in an exercise program, because exercise is allotted with "negative unit value".

This means the slimmer can chose to eat more than their allotment, but balance it out with exercise, or to eat just their allotment and do no exercise. The other positive thing about the system is that no foods are restricted. A slimmer can eat whatever they like, provided they stay within the allocated daily unit value - so if they want to spurge on a meal out, for example, they need only to save up some of their units in the days leading up to it. This flexibility helps slimmers adhere to the program, because they don't feel like they're being denied.

The down side of the system is that it requires that you keep track of the unit value of all the foods you eat during the day - as task some people might find tedious. However, the company does make things easier for you by allocating unit values not only to basic foods, but also to brand name products and meals that can be purchased in popular restaurant chains.
