Xenical is the brand name term for the drug Orlistat. Prescribed in conjunction with a specialized calorie-reduced diet, doctors often recommend this drug for those individuals whose weight is severely compromising their health. Orlistat is designed to inhibit the absorption of fats and thus reduce the number of calories that the body takes in and stores. Specifically this drug hinders the ability of the enzyme known as pancreatic lipase to break down and process triglycerides (or fats) within the intestine. As a result, fats are expelled through the faeces undigested.
This drug is taken orally, generally three times per day prior to eating meals. Studies conducted over the period of one year determined that between 35% and 55% of participants experienced a 5% decrease in total body mass (not necessarily fat). Approximately 16% to 25% of patients saw a 10% or greater decrease in total body mass. Of course, this drug isn't without its negative side effects and these must be taken into careful consideration. Some individuals experience oily or loose stools, flatulence, discharge, urgent or uncontrollable bowel movements and headaches. A few individuals have also experienced faecal incontinence. Due to these side effects, it is recommended that individuals avoid foods containing high levels of fat. In addition, it is recommended that this drug be taken with a multivitamin to maintain good nutrition. It is also advised that this drug not be taken if you're are pregnant, breastfeeding or experiencing gallbladder or kidney difficulties.
