Learning a new language can be a scary experience. You don't understand
the grammar, it has sounds you have never heard before and it's might as
well be written in Double Dutch!.
It can also be an exciting experience - opening up pathways to new cultures.
(Or at least makes sure you can order a meal when you are off on holiday!)
There are lots of different ways to begin learning a new language.
1. Many colleges run night classes - these tend to be reasonably well priced
and focus around the more common European languages such as Italian, French
and Spanish.
2. You could seek private tuition from a native speaker. This tends to be
more expensive but you get personal attention and a good opportunity to
work on the accent.
3. Most libraries have audio tapes with accompanying books offering an introduction
to a range of international languages. This is a cheap and cheerful option
that you really can do in your own time.
4. There are now many websites dedicated to translating words from English
into words from another language. This may not be the ideal way to pick
up a second language - but these sites sure are lots of fun!
